Citronellol
What is Citronellol ?
Citronellol is an organic compound with the chemical formula C10H18O. It is a colorless or pale yellow oily liquid, slightly soluble in water, and mainly used in food flavorings, for formulating citrus and cherry flavorings. It is also used in the formulation of low-grade soap flavorings and as a raw material for other fragrances.
It is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with aromas of lemon, lemongrass, and rose. It exists as three optically active forms: d-, l-, and dl-. D-citronellol is abundant in essential oils, being a major component of citronella oil and eucalyptus oil. In acidic media, it readily cyclizes to form menthol. It is soluble in ethanol and most non-volatile oils, slightly soluble in volatile oils and propylene glycol, and insoluble in glycerol and water.

As a fragrance ingredient, it provides a pleasant lemon and herbal aroma. It also has a mild fixative effect, helping to stabilize the overall fragrance.
Applications
1. Naturally found in essential oils such as lemon eucalyptus oil and citronella oil.
2. A flavoring agent permitted for use in food according to the national food safety standard GB2760.
3. Primarily used in soap and cosmetic fragrance formulations, generally at a concentration of less than 10%, with no restrictions from IFRA.
4. Used in formulating citrus, cherry, lemon, cologne, magnolia, lily of the valley, honey, and other fragrance types.
5. Commonly used in the synthesis of hydroxycitronellol and L-menthol, among other versatile flavorings.
